IFCI Share Price Falls Over 7% After A 30% Monthly Rally Ahead of NSE IPO

On September 8, 2026, The Shares of IFCI experienced a decline of 7% after a previous sharp increase of 30% within a month. As per news reports, this movement in share price is attributed to the National Stock Exchange's (NSE) IPO gaining approval from market regulator SEBI.
Through its significant stake in Stock Holding Corporation of India (SHCIL), which holds over 4% of NSE, IFCI's shares are sensitive to the developments concerning the NSE IPO.
SEBI Approves NSE IPO
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) recently approved the much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO) of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), aiming to raise around ₹30,000 crore.
The offering will feature an offer-for-sale (OFS) of up to 14.89 crore equity shares. With IFCI indirectly exposed to NSE through SHCIL, this approval has undoubtedly influenced its stock movement.
The NSE is expected to announce the price band on September 15, 2026. If the schedule proceeds smoothly, the IPO may open on September 18, 2026, with the listing around September 25, 2026. Analysts have noted the premium valuations that the NSE holds in the unlisted market due to its near-monopoly status.
NSE Valuation and Shareholders
As per news reports, in the unlisted market, NSE trades near 45 times its FY26 earnings, lower compared to BSE at around 70 times and MCX at approximately 80 times. Public sector entities, such as State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, along with several insurance companies, plan to monetise their holdings in the NSE through this IPO.
The Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) filed with SEBI indicates that these government-owned entities collectively hold approximately 7.97 crore shares as part of the proposed OFS, alongside stakeholders like MS Strategic (Mauritius) and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.
Secondary Effects on IFCI Shares
The indirect exposure to NSE through SHCIL suggests that IFCI's stock is notably influenced by developments related to the NSE's IPO. The recent profit-booking by investors contributed to the drop in IFCI shares, interrupting the stock’s upward streak following the 30% surge over the past month.

IFCI shares fell by 7% after rallying nearly 30% in the past month due to SEBI's approval of the NSE IPO. This decline was largely due to profit booking amid increased interest and excitement around the NSE's public offering.
