Record Date
The record date is the date on which a company determines the list of shareholders eligible to receive a corporate action, such as dividends, bonus shares, rights issues or stock splits. Investors whose shares are credited to their demat account on the record date qualify for the announced benefit.
Ex-Date
The ex-date is the day from which a stock begins trading without the entitlement to a declared corporate action, such as a dividend or bonus issue. Under India's T+1 settlement cycle, the ex-date and record date are generally the same. Investors must purchase the shares before the ex-date to become eligible, as shares bought on or after the ex-date do not carry the corporate action benefit. Until the ex-date, the stock trades on a cum-benefit basis, meaning buyers remain eligible for the announced corporate action.
