On Thursday, September 17, 2026, the NIFTY50 index opened at 23,195.25 and went on to register an intraday high of 23,363.55. The index managed to hold its ground throughout the session, hitting an intraday low of 23,193.65 before closing at 23,270.60, up by 53.00 points or 0.23%.

The advance-decline ratio for the NIFTY50 index leaned toward the bulls, with 36 constituents out of the 50 ending the session in the green, while 14 closed in negative territory and 0 remained unchanged.

HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited (HDFCLIFE) emerged as the top gainer on September 17, 2026, with its share price rising 5.05% to ₹557.00 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 93,04,355 shares. 

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) ranked second among the top gainers, with its share price advancing 4.49% to ₹314.50 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 1,16,36,347 shares. 

SBI Life Insurance Company Limited (SBILIFE) was the third top gainer, with its share price gaining 4.06% to ₹1,766.90 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 17,39,614 shares. 

Top Losers on September 17, 2026 

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) ended lower by 1.85% at ₹232.43 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 1,08,83,185 shares. 

Titan Company Limited (TITAN) share price declined 1.38% to ₹4,841.00 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 4,64,432 shares. 

HDFC Bank Limited (HDFCBANK) shares fell 1.18% to ₹713.00 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 2,07,97,724 shares.

The NIFTY50 index closed higher by 0.23% at 23,270.60. The market breadth remained positive with a supportive advance-decline setup as 36 index constituents closed up. HDFCLIFE, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, and SBILIFE emerged as the top gainers, while ONGC, TITAN, and HDFCBANK were among the top losers on September 17, 2026.
