Tata Sons Air India Fresh Capital Infusion of Over ₹10,000 Crore Gets In-Principle Board Approval

The board of Tata Sons has approved additional investment of more than ₹10,000 crore in Air India, contingent. The funding would be one of the largest amounts the group has declared to provide the airline after acquiring it for ₹18,000 crore in 2021.
This was decided at a board meeting in June conducted by N Chandrasekaran and also attended by Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata and vice-chairman Venu Srinivasan.
Air India Will Need To Make Its Case
The approval does not mean the entire amount will be infused immediately. When funding is required, Air India and other group companies will have to put forward a business case, according to people familiar with the matter.
The move follows a period of more than a year without fresh equity from Tata Sons. Air India's losses more than doubled in FY26, reaching ₹22,238 crore.
Debt Has Climbed To About ₹40,000 Crore
Tata Sons' FY26 report put its investment in Air India at ₹22,618 crore, unchanged during the year. With no new equity added, the airline turned to borrowings and other financing.
Its outstanding debt is now around ₹40,000 crore across 11 lenders. State Bank of India has the biggest exposure at ₹18,500 crore, while Bank of Baroda's exposure stands at ₹5,938 crore.
Singapore Airlines Faces A ₹3,350 Crore Requirement
Tata Sons owns 73.8% of Air India and Singapore Airlines holds 24.7%. Employees have about 1.5% through SBICAP Trustee Co.
To keep its stake from being diluted, Singapore Airlines would need to put in approximately ₹3,350 crore, based on the current shareholding structure.
Tata Boards To Meet In September
Tata Sons' board is scheduled to meet on September 17, following a Tata Trusts meeting on September 11. Tata Sons and Tata Trusts have both declined to comment on the proposed investment.

Conclusion
The proposed funding gives Air India another potential equity lifeline after a year without fresh injections from Tata Sons. It comes as the airline deals with substantial debt and a ₹22,238-crore loss reported for FY26.
