The National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) has announced the introduction of a Closing Auction Session (CAS) in the equity cash segment.

This change will also affect trading modalities in the equity derivatives segment, effective from August 3, 2026.

Changes in Trading Timings

As per the new circular, the trading hours for the equity derivatives segment will see a modification. The normal market will now close at 3:40 PM, a change from the previous schedule.

However, the pre-open session timings remain unchanged, with the open time at 9:00 AM and close time at 9:08 AM. The trade modification end time will continue to be 4:15 PM.

Price Band and Risk Controls

The NSE has confirmed that the provisions outlined in point 3.2 of the circular dated March 18, 2026, will apply to the price band and pre-trade risk controls.

This ensures that the trading environment remains secure and controlled.

NEAT Terminal Messages

During the start of the CAS in the equity segment, specific messages will be broadcasted on NEAT trading terminals.

These messages will inform traders about the revision of the operating price range for stock future contracts.

Any outstanding orders outside this revised range will be cancelled by the exchange.

Close Price Computation

There will be no alteration in the existing logic for computing the close price of contracts. The volume-weighted average price of trades will continue to be computed from 3:10 PM to 3:40 PM.

Implementation and Testing

The changes will be effective from August 3, 2026. The NSE will facilitate testing of these changes through mock trading sessions.

Members are advised to update their trading applications with the latest contract files available on the Extranet server and the NSE website.

Conclusion

The introduction of the Closing Auction Session in the equity cash segment by NSE marks a significant change in trading modalities. With adjustments in trading hours and risk controls, these changes aim to enhance the efficiency and security of market operations.
