Micron’s Gujarat Plant Set to Produce Hundreds of Millions of Chips in 2027

Micron Technology expects its Sanand facility in Gujarat to process hundreds of millions of chips in 2027. According to a Moneycontrol news report citing PTI, this would be higher than the tens of millions of chips the company expects the plant to handle in 2026.
Commercial Production Begins
Micron started commercial production at Sanand earlier this year. The facility is used for assembly and testing, rather than wafer fabrication.
Advanced DRAM and NAND wafers are supplied from Micron’s global manufacturing network. These wafers are then converted at Sanand into finished memory and storage products.
Shipments From Gujarat
Micron is already shipping finished DRAM and NAND products from Sanand to customers globally. These products carry the ‘Made in India’ label.
The company has also sent its first India-made memory modules to Dell Technologies. The modules are being used in laptops manufactured and sold in India.
$2.75 Billion Investment
The Sanand project represents a combined investment of around $2.75 billion by Micron and its government partners. Its first phase is expected to have more than 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space when fully ramped up.
Micron had earlier said the facility would assemble and test tens of millions of chips in 2026, followed by production of hundreds of millions in 2027. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra repeated the timeline at the inauguration of SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi.
Micron’s India Operations
Micron has been operating in India for seven years and directly employs more than 7,000 people. The company also has chip-design operations in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
According to Mehrotra, Micron’s teams in India have contributed to more than 3,700 patents, inventions and disclosures. The company’s India operations cover chip design, assembly, testing and product shipments.
AI and Memory Demand
Mehrotra said demand for memory and storage is increasing with the use of artificial intelligence. Larger AI models require more memory capacity, as well as faster, denser, and more power-efficient memory products.
Semiconductor Programme
India’s semiconductor push has also expanded through Semicon 2.0, approved in July with an outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore. The programme covers chip design, machinery and materials, fabrication, assembly and testing, research and development, and talent.
SEMICON India 2026 is being held in New Delhi from September 17 to 19, 2026.

Conclusion
Production at Micron’s Sanand facility is set to increase in 2027. The company expects the plant to process hundreds of millions of chips, up from tens of millions in 2026.
