AM Green’s $10 Billion Kakinada Green Ammonia Project Reaches Equipment Installation Stage

As per news reports, a $10 billion green hydrogen and green ammonia project at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh is set to reach a construction milestone with the installation of its first major equipment.
The project is being developed by AM Green and is scheduled to begin large-scale on-site assembly work this week.
Project Site and Development Model
The facility is located at Kakinada and is being developed through the conversion of an existing ammonia-urea complex.
The brownfield approach allows the project to use established industrial and port infrastructure while shifting production to green hydrogen and green ammonia based on renewable energy.
Planned Capacity and Timeline
The project has a total planned capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum of green ammonia. Commissioning will be phased, with 0.5 million tonnes per annum expected by 2027.
Capacity is planned to increase to 1 million tonnes by 2028, with full capacity targeted by 2030. Officials said the first phase is expected to be commissioned by March 2027.
Export Destinations and Use
Once operational, the facility is expected to enable India’s first exports of green ammonia. Initial export markets include Germany, Japan and Singapore.
Green ammonia is used internationally for shipping fuel, power generation and as an intermediate for green hydrogen supply in countries seeking lower-emission energy alternatives.
Power Generation and Storage
The integrated project includes 7.5 gigawatts of solar and wind generation capacity and 1,950 megawatts of electrolyser capacity.
It also includes 2 gigawatts of round-the-clock renewable power, supported by pumped hydro storage. This includes a pumped hydro project at Pinnapuram in Andhra Pradesh, intended to provide continuous power supply.
Commercial Agreements and Employment
AM Green has signed long-term supply agreements with Germany-based utility Uniper and is in discussions with potential buyers in Japan and Singapore.
The project is to generate around 8,000 jobs during the construction phase, with additional employment during operations and in related sectors such as logistics, storage, and port services.
The project aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2024, which focuses on expanding green hydrogen and green ammonia capacity within the state.
