Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana: Union Cabinet Approves ₹6,520 Crore Outlay
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has sanctioned a total budget allocation of ₹6,520 crore for the Central Sector Scheme, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY). This amount includes an additional ₹1,920 crore earmarked for the ongoing scheme during the 15th Finance Commission Cycle (2021-22 to 2025-26).
Key Components of the ₹6,520 Crore Approval
The approval comprises two major financial provisions:
- ₹1,000 crore dedicated to establishing 50 Multi-Product Food Irradiation Units under the Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure (ICCVAI) scheme.
- Setting up 100 Food Testing Laboratories (FTLs) accredited by NABL under the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Infrastructure (FSQAI) scheme, both components of PMKSY aligned with recent budget announcements.
- ₹920 crore allocated for sanctioning projects across various component schemes of PMKSY during the 15th Finance Commission Cycle.

Demand-Driven Schemes and Proposal Process
Both ICCVAI and FSQAI operate on a demand-driven model. To identify suitable projects, Expression of Interests (EOIs) will be issued, inviting proposals from eligible entities nationwide. These proposals will undergo thorough evaluation based on the scheme’s eligibility criteria and guidelines before approval.
Impact and Expected Outcomes
- Food Irradiation Units: The 50 proposed multi-product irradiation units will collectively enhance food preservation capacity, estimated between 20 to 30 lakh metric tonnes per annum, depending on the food types processed.
- Food Testing Laboratories: The establishment of 100 NABL-accredited laboratories in the private sector will bolster infrastructure for advanced food sample testing, thereby ensuring stringent compliance with food safety standards and facilitating the supply of safe, quality food products.
