India To End Physical Boarding Pass and Stamping Requirement for International Flyers From September 1, 2026

International passengers departing from Indian airports will no longer be required to carry a physical boarding pass for immigration clearance from September 1, according to an Economic Times news report.
The Bureau of Immigration (BOI) has decided to end the mandatory requirement for physical boarding passes and their stamping at immigration counters across international airports in the country.
E-Boarding Passes Can Be Used
Passengers will be allowed to show their e-boarding passes on their smartphones during immigration clearance. Physical boarding passes can still be presented if passengers choose to carry them.
However, immigration officials will no longer stamp either the physical copies produced by passengers or require one specifically for clearance under the revised procedure.
Directive Sent to Airport Stakeholders
The change was communicated to airport and security stakeholders through an official directive, according to reports. The communication was also shared with international airport operators and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
The Bureau of Immigration has asked the concerned agencies to inform their staff about the revised procedure before it comes into effect on September 1, 2026.
Errors and Passenger Inconvenience Cited
The existing system required international passengers to produce a physical boarding pass at the immigration counter, where it was stamped by the immigration officer.
According to the communication, the process had caused inconvenience to passengers. Cases of errors in reading boarding passes due to improper or incorrect stamping were also reported.
CISF Had Already Stopped Stamping Passes
CISF personnel had stopped stamping boarding passes for both domestic and international passengers several years ago, security officials said.
International travellers were required to show their boarding passes during the immigration process, while the role of CISF during individual security checks did not include stamping the document.
Other Immigration Changes Under Consideration
Officials also said a pilot exercise involving the removal of immigration entry and exit stamping for Indian passport holders is underway.
Once the pilot process is completed, the revised system is expected to be introduced more widely at Indian airports.
