India Retail Inflation Rises to 4.45% in July 2026 as Food Inflation Accelerates to 5.52%

India's retail inflation increased in July 2026, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rising to 4.45% from 4.38% in June 2026.
Food Inflation Emerges as Key Pressure Point
The sharper movement came from food prices, with food inflation accelerating to 5.52% in July 2026 from 5.32% in June 2026, making food prices the key factor behind the slightly higher-than-expected headline inflation reading.
Rural and Urban Inflation Move Higher
Rural inflation increased to 4.84% from 4.74% in June, while urban inflation rose more modestly to 3.96% from 3.93%.
The increase across both segments indicates that the upward movement in headline inflation was not limited to either rural or urban consumers.
Housing and Clothing Inflation Rise
Housing inflation edged up to 2.22% from 2.10% in June, while inflation in clothing and footwear increased to 3.38% from 3.23%.
Inflation in restaurant and accommodation services also recorded a sharper increase, rising to 7.72% from 6.91% in the previous month.
Some Inflation Categories Ease
Several categories recorded moderation during July 2026. Health inflation declined to 1.34% from 1.42%, while inflation in personal care, social production and miscellaneous goods eased to 14.77% from 16.72%.

Conclusion
India's retail inflation remained relatively close to market expectations in July, but the acceleration in food inflation stands out as the major pressure point. The movement across food and several services categories will remain important for assessing the direction of inflation in the coming months.
