Government Reduces Rural LPG Refill Booking Gap From 45 Days To 25 Days

As per an NDTV Profit news report, the minimum gap for rural consumers to book a fresh LPG cylinder refill has been reduced to 25 days from 45 days.  

The Union government has approved the change, according to Mehul J Patel, state president of the LPG Distributors of India. The revised rule was brought into effect through an official update issued on September 7, 2026.  

A letter from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to oil marketing companies also stated that the waiting period had been reduced from 45 days to 25 days. 

Rural And Urban Rules Aligned 

Rural consumers can now place a fresh refill booking after 25 days have passed since delivery of their previous cylinder. The earlier 45-day requirement meant rural households had a longer interval between successive refill bookings. 

The minimum booking gap for urban consumers was already 25 days and remains unchanged. The revised rule therefore brings the booking period for rural consumers in line with the existing urban norm. 

Gulf LPG Supplies Rise 

The change comes amid an improvement in LPG supplies to India. Shipments from the Gulf region nearly doubled in August from July, based on data from Kpler and the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell. 

The Gulf accounted for 29.7% of India's LPG imports in August, compared with 16.4% in July. UAE shipments increased to 198,860 tonnes, while Kuwait's supplies rose to 114,580 tonnes from 44,230 tonnes. 

Qatar's LPG shipments also increased to 65,400 tonnes from 19,320 tonnes. In contrast, LPG shipments from the US fell 25.8% month-on-month to 724,150 tonnes, although the US continued to account for more than 50% of India's LPG imports. 

LPG Consumption at Six-Month High 

India's LPG consumption rose 3.2% month-on-month to 24.2 MT in August, marking a six-month high. Despite the monthly increase, consumption remained 16% lower year-on-year. 

Before the West Asia crisis, nearly 90% of India's imported LPG came from the Gulf region. The latest import figures show the Gulf regaining some share of India's LPG supply in August.

The minimum LPG refill booking gap for rural consumers is now 25 days, down from 45 days. The change follows improved LPG supplies and brings rural booking rules in line with urban consumers.
