Cabinet Approves Sarthak-PDS Scheme Extension with ₹25,530 Crore Central Outlay

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the Sarthak-PDS scheme, as per PTI report.
This decision involves a central outlay of ₹25,530 crore, aimed at supporting state agencies in the intra-state movement of food grains and modernising the public distribution system.
Details of the Sarthak-PDS Scheme
Named the 'Scheme for Assistance in Ration Transport and Handling-Income with Automation in PDS' (Sarthak-PDS), this initiative is set to operate during the 16th Finance Commission cycle award period.
The scheme will be implemented over 5 years, from April 2026 to March 2031, with the central government contributing ₹25,530 crore.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the scheme aims to address the challenges faced by state agencies in transporting food grains from large FCI warehouses to various districts, divisions, and fair price shops.
This support is expected to alleviate the financial burden on state agencies.
Digital Modernisation of Public Distribution Services
The Sarthak-PDS scheme also introduces a digital platform to streamline national food security operations.
With an outlay of ₹25,530 crore, the platform seeks to integrate intra-state food grain movement, track dealer margins, and enhance multilingual accessibility for beneficiaries nationwide.
These reforms are part of a broader effort to modernise public distribution services, ensuring efficient and transparent operations.
The initiative aligns with the objectives of the Prime Minister Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which has significantly impacted food security and family welfare across the country.
